AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

This is a degeneration of the central retina, the macula, which generally affects people over 50 years of age. The macula allows precise vision of things, reading, seeing objects, details… AMD results in a decrease in central vision which lead to significant or even total loss.

THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF AMD

There are two types of AMD that both have the same effect on central vision of the retina.

The dry (atrophic) form: It is the most widespread. Its evolution is slow but there is no truly effective treatment to date to cure it. Food supplements can however slow down the degeneration of the retina (omega 3, antioxidants).

The wet form (exudative). New blood vessels form deep in the retina and damage central vision. For this form, injections of anti-VEGF make it possible to limit / destroy these new vessels.

In both cases, rapid screening and follow-up help limit the progression of the disease.

Visual rehabilitation helps maintain autonomy when irreversible vision damage has occurred.
